Realme X vs Redmi K20: Clash of the Budget Flagships
Xiaomi has been selling most of its smartphones under its Redmi brand now and being super successful in India in the last 5 years, Redmi lineup is the frontrunning brand which is also being expanded exponentially. With the launch of the Poco smartphone being uncertain, Redmi K20 Pro will be the Flagship offering from Xiaomi. Oppo unveiled a similar sub-brand in the name of Realme which attracted the customers with its aggressive pricing. Realme announced Realme X it’s flagship offering which launched in India on July 15th for very aggressive pricing and offering in under 20k segment.
We put both, Redmi K20 and Realme X to a comparison considering both smartphones are fighting for the same segment, i.e the budget flagship smartphone.
The Redmi K20 phone comes with a large 6.39-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED panel with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection. The front shooter is placed on an Automatic slider also called pop-up. Providing a Full-screen view with a trivial chin at the bottom.
Under the hood, the smartphone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 SoC paired with 4/6/8GB RAM. Redmi have equipped the K20 with a 4000 mAh battery in this smartphone while keeping the smartphone thin. Also, the smartphone has a new-generation in-display fingerprint scanner which is faster than previous Xiaomi’s implementation. On the camera front, the primary setup is a tri-camera setup consisting of 48mp Primary camera + 8mp telephoto lens with 2x Optical Zoom +13mp UltraWide sensor and a 20mp selfie shooter.
The Realme X comes with a 6.52-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED panel. The smartphone also sports a Pop-up camera giving a full-screen display. The smartphone also has a little chin at the bottom.
Under the hood, the smartphone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 which is paired with 4/6GB RAM options. Realme X has 3600 mAh battery with Super Vooc fast charging technology. The fingerprint scanner beneath the display, the scanner is the same as the one Oppo has been using in their smartphone. On the camera front, the smartphone uses a 48MP Sony IMX586 primary sensor and a 5MP secondary camera. The selfie shooter is a 16MP wide-angle lens.
Display and design
Both the smartphones use similar display panels, Super AMOLED panels with Optical in-display fingerprint scanners beneath. There is a difference in screen size as the Realme X sports a tad taller panel which leads to falling in Pixel density. On the design front, both the phones have glass sandwich design and gradient finish at the back. Realme X misses out on NFC while the Redmi K20 doesn’t rest the smartphone are visually identical to each other.
Redmi K20 beats the Realme X with a huge margin in terms of Camera. The K20 sports a tri-camera setup while the latter sports a Dual camera setup. The same tri-camera setup as the Pro variant there might be a drop in performance due to CPU but not an over the top difference. The phone brings Optical Zoom, Wide angle lens while the Realme X just have two sensors, One same as the k20 other just an ordinary Phase detection camera for better portrait shots. The same combination of lenses is available in Redmi Note 7 Pro which is available for only Rs 13,999.
The front camera of the two smartphones are at par with each other, Realme’s 16 MP shooter and Redmi’s 20 MP shooter perform very similarly to each other. While the Realme brings in excessive beautification which seems unnatural at times.
Realme also teased a smartphone with a 64MP primary camera, We expect Realme X to be receiving the 64MP Samsung GW1 sensor in a special edition variant. Till the time there is no 64MP variant, Camera front is dominated by the Redmi K20.
Realme X comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 processor, which has 2-high performance cores and 6-standard cores. During the launch event of Redmi Note 7 pro which uses an 11nm snapdragon 675 SoC, Redmi claimed it to outperform Snapdragon 710 in terms of Raw performance. Being an 11nm chip it tends to overheat, which isn’t the case with Realme X. It tends to be less Hot. The battery capacity of the Realme X is 3600 mAh, being the smartphone with larger display battery life is affected.

The Redmi K20 sports a Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 processor, which is an 8nm chip. Unlike the previous Redmi smartphones with 600-series processor the Snapdragon 730- Redmi K20 tends to get less hot. The battery life of the smartphone also gets a bump, The phone is powered by a 4000 mAh battery which gives a pretty solid run.
The Redmi smartphone has Quick Charge 4.0+ for fast charging, Whereas the Realme smartphone has VOOC charging which have comparable charging time. While the Quick Charge 4 support makes the smartphone work well with the third party power banks and car chargers.
Price and Availablity
The Realme X smartphone will available from 18th of July with the price starting at INR 16,999 for the 4+128GB variant while the 8+128GB will be sold for INR 19,999. The Redmi K20 smartphone is priced at INR 21,999 for the 6+64GB version and will be made available from 22nd July on Flipkart.
They are both competing in the same price bracket, there is a minor difference in terms of specifications, design and price of this smartphone. There is not a lot of difference between the two devices while the decision of the one you would rather prefer comes down to the point of are you willing to shell out a little more cash for a little more upgrade to buy the Redmi K20.
Redmi k20 will be sold in flash sales while Realme X will be available normally. Redmi’s MIUI has ads in it whereas the Realme’s UI doesn’t and a lot cleaner and bloat-free to the MIUI.
