JioPhone 2: 4G qwerty phone, how to buy? Should you buy?

Its already been a month from the first flash sale of the new Jio smartphone the Jiophone 2. Which is the rightful successor to India’s cheapest 4G enabled phone the Jio phone! The new JioPhone brings in an all-new design with qwerty keypad setup and a wider screen size.

Jio Phone 2

The JioPhone 2 runs KaiOS, and sports a 2.4-inch QVGA display. The 4G feature phone comes with 512MB of RAM and 4GB of inbuilt storage, which is expandable via microSD card (up to 128GB). There is a 2-megapixel camera sensor on the back and a 0.3 Mp on the front of the handset. Connectivity options include 4G VoLTE, VoWi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, NFC, and FM radio, and is backed by a 2,000mAh battery under the hood. There is a dedicated physical button to trigger Google Assistant.

For the JioPhone 2, users can choose between three different recharges. The Rs. 49 prepaid pack offers users with unlimited voice calling and 1GB of 4G data for the entire month. The Rs. 99 pack comes with unlimited calling, 300 SMS messages, and 0.5GB 4G data per day for a period of 28 days. How to buy?

The new JioPhone 2 is available on weekly flash sale on Thursdays. The flash sale is conducted on the itself. You may require your Adhaar card while the purchase if you are a new customer. For non-prime members, the phone is priced at Rs 3049, an additional 50 for prime membership.

Should you buy?

The phone looks pretty impressive in the price tag but doesn’t give justice to the image of JioPhone which was effectively free with the buyback option.

This is 2018, not 2014 where the QWERTY phone still made sense moreover the phone ships in a VGA camera at the front which are long gone from the phone market. A basic phone with all the basic features with an addon 4G capability is the package they are offering.

Earlier Lyf, a Reliance-owned company used to ship touchscreen smartphones at a price of Rs 4000 which is 1k premium to the JioPhone itself. So where is the point of buying a phone with minimal features and old tech?

So we recommend any old 2015-16 smartphone or any 2018 smartphone available at a price of Rs 3000-5000 will be a better buy than the JioPhone 2.
