Bitcoin Scam: High- Profile Twitter accounts hacked
The Bitcoin scam is one of the biggest scams of the year, took place on 15 July 2020. This scam involved hacking of some very high profile Twitter handle and asking people to donate the money in the coin cryptocurrency. The scams include the twitter handle of personalities like Former US president Barak Obama, rapper Kanye West, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, and much more. This scam doesn’t only include famous personalities but some brands like Apple and Uber. Twitter is doing it’s best to find the person behind the hacking. They have blocked the access of all the verified accounts to continue the investigation.
Twitter’s Bitcoin Scam
A suspicious tweet was on Twitter having a similar message of donating coins and get a double return. The tweet was the first post by Bill Gates’s account saying ” Everone is asking me to give back. You send $,1,000, I send you back $ 2,000.” So this message was copied and post form several verified accounts about double return offer valid for 30 min.
The messages have shared only three Bitcoin address and they all belong to the same organization called CryptoForHealth h. As per the BBC report, the web address of these messages was the same as the e-mail address”firstname.lastname@example.org”. The user name of the profile is Anthony Elias. Moreover, the report also mentioned that the CryptoForHealth organization had an Insta account with a description as “it was us” but it cannot be found now.
Investigation on the Scam
After the scam, Twitter has said that they are investigating the issue and taking steps to fix it. They blocked the access of all the verified accounts globally. Moreover, they had to return some accounts to their original owners. Twitter has mentioned that they will return all the accounts to their owner once their investigation is completed.
In the case of the investigation, Twitter has said that it was a result of a “coordinated social engineering attack” and the team is trying their best to secure it. They added that “we know they used access to take control of many highly-visible(including verified) accounts and Tweet on their behalf. We’re looking into what other malicious activity that may have conducted or information they may have accessed”. From the inside source the company has shared that the insider was responsible for this hack. The added a quote “We used a rep that literally done all the work for us”.
The main reason for hacking the accounts and asking for the donation is to earn more money. AS per the report from the BBC, the hacker has received 373 transactions till now, collecting 12.86252562 coins equal to $118,300 and more
